Description
Pfizer Selective Enterococcus Agar is used for selective isolation and cultivation of Enterococci. It also is a selective primary medium, differentiating Enterococci and Streptococci. Enterococcus faecalis hydrolyses and forms blackening around the colony. Esculin, a glycoside, is hydrolyzed by Enterococci to esculetin and dextrose. Esculetin reacts with ferric ammonium citrate to form a dark brown to black coloured complex. Streptococci does not exhibit esculin hydrolysis. It is prepared by replacing animal peptones with vegetable defined peptones to avoid BSE/TSE/GMO risk.
